The Chance to Build a Story

Landscape images are some of my favorite to capture, because they require taking a trip to a faraway place that is free from the lights and noise of the city. For me, planning a trip to the Utah desert or the West Virginia mountains is therapeutic. It gives me a way to escape the bustle of the city and get perspective on what it feels like to be floating through space on a giant blue rock.

When it comes to landscape photography it is all about location. You have place yourself in an area that has minimal light pollution, along with an environment that showcases features which are in direct contrast to the mundane of everyday life. The story is told through these features in the environment. Sometimes it's the silhouettes of friends admiring the northern lights from their backyard. Sometimes it is a curious kid exploring the West under the arches in the canyons of Utah. whatever it is, it is up to the photographer to draw the viewer in and create the feeling of what it was like to be there in that moment from a single photo.

It's All About the Journey

When you experience something for the first time, it seems like time begins to slow down as your senses focus on where you are and what you're feeling. For me, there's nothing more exiting than exploring the massive rock formations in Utah, or navigating the sand dunes of Colorado. The dream of taking a roadtrip out to Joshua Tree in California, or Acadia in Maine to photograph the night sky is what it's all about.

Hopefully I can convince you it is worth your time to connect with the natural world through the night sky. Many will live their lives never looking up; I think it is far more dangerous to play it safe, to head inside when it gets dark. I say go out. Lay out a blanket and immerse yourself in the stars and planets. Watch the moon rise silently in the east. Marvel at the passing meteor, because it is only here for a brief moment.
